Wheelchair turning space is provided in the shower room, kitchen and bunk room. One lower bunk offers lateral transfer without obstruction. The family summerhouse, with its accessible deck overlooking the pond, can usually be made available to wheelchair users on request.

Booking Terms

What’s included?

The hut hostel has a fully equipped kitchen catering for eight people with a fridge, oven and gas hobs. We provide all linen and some domestic essentials including cooking oil, tea, coffee, sugar, salt and pepper. Fire-lighting materials are provided including logs for the wood-burning stove and the outside chimenea fire.

Maximum occupancy

Please remember that 8 is our absolute maximum occupancy for this small hut-hostel.  The social spaces inside and under the outside ‘sitooterie’ social are quite adequate, if cosy. Out of respect for guests staying in other huts and the camping ground we cannot accept combination bookings for any group larger than 8.

Kit List

Please bring personal towels. Duvets, covers, pillows and extra rugs are provided. On health and safety advice we have to stipulate that no personal sleeping bags are brought into the hut hostel. Some charcoal (and marshmallows?) for a BBQ and perhaps fire-lighters, – but no coal or equivalents please. A torch may be useful except perhaps in high summer.

We recommend that children under 5 years old do not use the ship’s ladder to the gallery and should sleep downstairs If you bring a toddler we can provide a fire guard for the wood stove Please do not approach the pond or wander amongst the ducks, – do though enjoy the Welcoming Seat overlooking the pond

Regrettably visiting dog/s are not possible in the hut on account of the sensitive wildlife in the vicinity. However we can personally recommend a small local kennels offering first class accommodation and individual care at a very reasonable price to enable your pet to get the benefit of the great walks here.

We take great care in preparing the hut hostel for your arrival. If though you need extra supplies of kitchen or shower room cleaning equipment or utensils for cooking, please do ask us. With such a quirky space in which to live, a little housekeeping from you each day will be worth the effort. We recommend it!  On your departure we greatly appreciate you leaving the hostel and sitooterie much as you found them on arrival. In the event of damage, or a need for much more cleaning time following your visit we reserve the right to make a surcharge to cover the extra costs. The sitooterie wood fire BBQ is very popular. Considerate guests use the woodstocks economically and replace wood cut for them by the previous visitors. Cut logs are stored on the peat barrow. The saw and log splitter are there for your use. Thank you.

Considerate Guests

Please be mindful of the expectations of guests in all accommodations to enjoy the peacefulness of The Lazy Duck.  You will understand therefore that Stags and Hens cannot be accommodated. For everybody’s benefit we ask for a respectful quiet period in and around the hostel between 10pm and 8am.  This allows for outdoor folk off early and young children to get a good night’s sleep. Be assured, Lazy Duck is a non-smoking environment, including out-of-doors, including e-cigarettes.

Extra Visitors

We are very small here. We try to accommodate your visiting friends who are not staying with us. Out of respect for others who are staying in the huts and on the camping ground it is though essential you discuss with us first. This way we do not get overcrowded and everyone remains happy.

Hot Tub & Sauna

Lazy Duck’s wood fired hot tub can be booked in advance via email or calling us by 10am on the same day on 0131 618 6198. A minimum charge of £25 applies, however depending on uptake on the day costs can be shared on the basis of £7.50 per person, per 1 hour private session. Very sorry, we cannot offer the hot tub on New Year’s Eve, nor on Christmas Day.

The hot tub has a maximum capacity of 6 people, so if you book for 8 we recommend booking a two hour slot and rotating people in the tub. If you do this, the minimum fee will be £30 for two hours, or £7.50 per person.

For the 2-person infra-red sauna we need to have notice 90mins in advance and a minimum charge of £7.50 applies.  A standard 40 minute private session with music (your choice) for 2 people costs £10, normally available on any day of the year.

Personal belongings

Please accept full responsibility for your own belongings whilst staying at The Lazy Duck. We don’t provide keys or lockers so feel free to ask us to safeguard valuables in the house or cottage when you go out, – or take them with you.
